China ‘extremely concerned’ at US military plan in South China Sea

China is ‘extremely concerned’ at a US plan to consider dispatching military ships and aircraft to the disputed waters of the South China Sea, it said on Wednesday.

Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, made the remarks at a regular briefing.

The Pentagon is weighing the move to assert freedom of navigation around rapidly growing Chinese-made artificial islands in the contested sea, a US official said on Tuesday.

  1. US has no right to intervene in China's legitimate activities in S. China Sea...

Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai reiterated Wednesday that Washington has no right whatsoever to intervene in the legitimate activities conducted by China in the South China Sea, while urging related parties to resolve the disputes through diplomatic talks.

In an interview with Washington-based Chinese media outlets, Cui slammed what he called double standards adopted by the United States when it comes to the land reclamation activities in the region.

While pointing an accusing finger at China, Washington has chosen to keep silent on earlier such activities conducted by some other countries which illegally occupied Chinese islands and reefs, he said.

Cui rebuked the claim made by some U.S. lawmakers at a Senate hearing Wednesday that China is raising tensions in the South China Sea, citing that it was the active intervention by the United States in the maritime disputes that has actually created tensions in the area.

The veteran Chinese diplomat also criticized the U.S. plan to send military planes and ships to assert "freedom of navigation" around China-owned islands and reefs in the South China Sea.

"The Cold-War mentality, which is prone to the use of force to resolve disputes, is already outdated.".........http://www.china.org.cn/world/2015-05/14/content_35571277.htm

  2. China cautions U.S. Navy on patrols in South China Sea...

Washington (CNN)The U.S. is considering deploying aircraft and ships to contest Chinese claims to disputed islands in the South China Sea, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Options are on the table to fly surveillance aircraft and sail Navy ships nearby in a move that puts the U.S. directly into a contentious territorial contest in East Asia, in which, until now, the U.S. has avoided overtly taking sides.

The South China Sea is the subject of numerous rival -- often messy -- territorial claims, with China, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam disputing sovereignty of several island chains and nearby waters.

China on Wednesday cautioned the U.S. against taking any actions that might be considered provocative, according to a report from the state-run Xinhua news service.......http://edition.cnn.com/2015/05/13/politics/south-china-sea-us-surveillance-aircraft/index.html

  4. Vietnam calls for restraint in South China Sea disputed islands issue...

Hanoi has called on all interested parties to show restraint in resolving disagreements in the South China Sea, Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh told a press conference on Thursday.

The US earlier said it is considering deploying aircraft and ships to contest Chinese claims to disputed Spratly islands in the South China Sea.

"All countries in the region and beyond are interested in maintaining peace, stability and ensuring security of navy and air routes in the South China Sea. That is why it is obvious that any emerging disagreements should be solved by peaceful means on the basis of talks and in clear compliance with international law," Binh said.

On Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying called for refraining from provocations in the South China Sea. "We urge parties concerned to be discreet in words and actions, avoid taking any risky and provocative actions and safeguard regional peace and stability," the spokesperson said. "The Chinese side advocates the freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, yet the freedom definitely does not mean that foreign military vessels and aircrafts can enter one country's territorial waters and airspace at will," she added......http://tass.ru/en/world/794665
