Iran Warns of War if Aid Ship to Yemen Attacked

The deputy chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces warned on Tuesday that Iran would retaliate in force against any country, which attacks an Iranian ship heading to Yemen with humanitarian aid cargo on board.

"Attacking the Iranian Red Crescent aid ship will spark war in the region", Brigadier General Massoud Jazzayeri told the Arabic-language TV Alalam.

"The US and Saudi Arabia should know that Iran's self-restraint has a limit," he cautioned.

An Iranian ship carrying 2,500 tons of medical supplies, relief workers and peace activists from several countries left the Southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas for Yemen’s Red Sea port of Hudaydah, Iran’s Fars news agency reported.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has been trying to dispatch humanitarian aid to Yemen by sea and air, but has failed due to Saudi Arabia's full blockade of the war-ravaged country.

Iran had earlier sent five consignments of humanitarian aid to Yemen, including a total of 69 tons of relief, medical, treatment, and consumer items, the agency reported.

Saudi Arabia launched its bombing campaign against Yemen on March 26 in an attempt to drive out the Shiite Houthi militants who seized power in Yemen, and to reinstate the fugitive President Mansour Hadi.

  2. Iran says Saudi-led forces cannot inspect Yemen-bound ship...

Iran will not allow Saudi-led naval forces to inspect a cargo ship bound for Yemen under military escort, foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said, in a challenge to the kingdom's control of Yemeni waters.

A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia has imposed inspections on all ships entering Yemen in an attempt to prevent weapons being smuggled to the rebel Houthi group that controls much of the country.

"Permission to inspect the ship carrying humanitarian aid from Iran will not be given to countries participating in the Yemen conflict," Afkham was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency on Wednesday.

Iran on Tuesday said warships would escort the Iran Shahed cargo ship, which it says is carrying humanitarian supplies, to the rebel-held port of Hodaida in western Yemen as a cease-fire between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis went into effect.

The United States criticised the move and urged Iran to redirect the ship to Djibouti, from where the United Nations is coordinating aid distribution.

  4. Yemen warned on Wednesday that if Iran did not allow a cargo ship bound for the Arabian peninsula with a military escort to be searched then it "bears complete responsibility for any incident that arises from their attempt to enter Yemeni waters."..

Iran said earlier on Wednesday it would not allow Saudi Arabia-led coalition forces to inspect the ship, which it says contains humanitarian aid. The ship left Iran on Monday and is being escorted by Iranian warships.

"The Yemeni government and the coalition forces do not object to aid shipments entering Yemen as long as they obtain the necessary permits from the legitimate government of Yemen and are searched prior to entry," Yemen's UN mission told the UN Security Council in a letter, seen by Reuters.

Five Iranian boats fired shots across the bow of a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel in the international waters of the Gulf on Thursday, CNN reported, citing a U.S. official.

It was unclear if the shots hit the vessel, CNN said. After the shots, the cargo vessel turned to the national waters of the United Arab Emirates, where that country protected it using its coast guard, CNN also said.

There were no U.S. personnel on the vessel, according to CNN. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report, and representatives for the Pentagon could not be immediately reached for comment............reuters.com
