Iraq urges US-led coalition to change strategy to defeat ISIS/ISIL

Iraq called on the US-led coalition Friday to change its strategy against the Islamic State (IS) in bid to defeat the terror group.

After IS took control of Ramadi city in north Iraq, there is an immediate need at the present time for changing the coalition's strategy, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Mutlek told Xinhua during the World Economic Forum at the Dead Sea, Jordan.

"We need immediate intervention before the entire Anbar province falls to the hands of the IS," he said.

On Thursday, IS took control of Ramadi, the capital of Iraq's largest province of Anbar.

The Iraqi official called for immediate Arab intervention to put an end to the IS.

He added that Jordan can play a key role in defeating the IS, which is close to the kingdom's border.

"The situation is serious. We welcome Jordan's help as the Jordanian army has great capabilities that can be a turning point in defeating the IS," he said.

The official added that more support is needed for the Iraqi army to be able to restore stability in the country.

Jordan is part of a US-led coalition to fight the IS. The coalition includes several Arab and western countries.

  1. Iraqi troops fighting Islamic State group forces have cleared a ground route into the country's largest oil refinery, the US military said Friday...

"Iraqi Security Forces and Federal Police, enabled by the coalition, have successfully cleared and established a ground route" into the Baiji refinery, the US military said in a statement.

"Reinforcement and resupply of the ISF within the refinery is on-going," it added.

The refinery is located near Baiji, around 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Baghdad. It has been a target of Islamic State forces for months.

Control of the Baiji area is seen as a key step toward the reconquest of the main IS hub of Mosul.

The vast complex, which once produced 300,000 barrels per day of refined products meeting half of the country's needs, remained besieged by IS fighters for months following the group's massive onslaught across Iraq in June 2014.

The siege was broken last year but IS attacked anew and in April some of its fighters managed to establish a foothold inside the refinery compound.

"In the past 72 hours, we have seen the ISF make steady, measured progress" in regaining some of the areas leading to the refinery, said Brigadier General Thomas Weidley, Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve chief of staff.

The Iraqi forces met with significant IS resistance in the form of IEDs, suicide vehicle borne IEDs, as well as heavy weapon and rocket fire attacks, he added.

    1. A convoy of Shi'ite militia fighters and Iraqi army forces set out from a base near the western provincial capital of Ramadi on Saturday, heading towards areas controlled by Islamic State militants, an eyewitness and a local official said...

Anbar provincial council member Azzal Obaid said hundreds of fighters, who arrived at the Habbaniya air base last week after Ramadi was overrun by Islamic State, were in Khalidiya and were approaching Siddiqiya and Madiq, towns in contested areas near Ramadi.

While pro-government forces are seeking to retake Ramadi, Islamic State insurgents have been pushing forward in the direction of Fallujah in a bid to take more territory in Anbar province that would bring them closer to the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
