Saudi-led coalition announces Yemen ceasefire in effect

The Saudi-led coalition announced that a five-day ceasefire in Yemen started at 11 p.m . (2000 GMT) on Tuesday, aiming to allow deliveries of desperately needed relief supplies, local daily Al Eqtisadiya reported.

The announcement was made by Ahmed Asseri, spokesman for the coalition, which has been striking Yemen's Houthi rebels since March 26.

The spokesman said no ship will be allowed to enter Yemen without the coordination with the coalition forces, in response to an attempt of an Iranian ship to break the maritime ban.

He said Iran could send relief supplies to Yemen through the United Nations as the coalition provides permission for humanitarian aid in association with the UN.

  • The Houthis militias Tuesday attacked locations in the Saudi border city Jezan, hours before the ceasefire took effect, the spokesman said, while affirming the readiness of Saudi land forces to response to any Houthi attack.
Saudi Arabia last week announced the truce to allow badly needed humanitarian aid to reach besieged civilians inside the conflict-battered country.

The conflict in Yemen has roughly claimed the lives of more than 1,500 and injured some 6,000 others since it started.

  1. Yemen ceasefire begins as Iran sends cargo ship...

A ceasefire began after weeks of Saudi-led coalition bombing in Yemen on Tuesday night, but air strikes continued to hit the rebel-held capital Sanaa hours before the humanitarian truce took effect and Iran dispatched a cargo ship to the country.

The ceasefire began at 11 p.m. (2000 GMT), said Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri, spokesman for a Saudi-led coalition which has been striking the country’s Houthi rebels since March 26.

It is intended to allow the shipment of food and medicine to the country, which aid groups warn faces a humanitarian catastrophe after more than seven weeks of war.

There was no let up in fighting, despite the imminent truce.

The Houthis shelled Saudi border areas in Jizan province until the last moments before the ceasefire started, Asseri said on al-Arabiya television, adding that this gave him no confidence the rebel group intended to keep to the truce.

And as the ceasefire neared, witnesses said the Saudi-led alliance bombed Houthi positions in the southern port of Aden, where local armed groups were still fighting the rebels.

The United States said it was tracking Iranian warships accompanying the vessel bound for Hodaida port, and urged Iran instead to use a U.N. distribution hub in Djibouti to provide help to people in the war-damaged Arabian Peninsula country. “We would discourage any provocative actions,” said U.S...........france24.com

  2. Yemen officials say some ground fighting after ceasefire...

With cargo ships poised to launch a desperately needed aid operation in embattled Yemen, a five-day humanitarian ceasefire began May 12 night, just hours after Saudi-led coalition warplanes struck against Shiite rebels and their allies.

There were reports of continued ground fighting in some areas, with security officials and witnesses saying fierce combat broke out about a half hour after the ceasefire began when rebels tried to storm the southern city of Dhale, firing tank shells, rockets and mortars. But no airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition battling the rebels were reported.

The officials and tribal leaders also accused the rebels and their allies of reinforcing their positions.

The truce will test the adversaries' desire to enter into peace talks to try to end the fighting that has killed hundreds of civilians since March. Both sides say they are ready to respond with violence if their opponent breaks the cease-fire......hurriyetdailynews.com

  3. Iranian Commander to US, Saudi: Attacking Aid Ship Will Spark War in the Region...

Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazzayeri warned the United States and Saudi Arabia that a war would take place in the region in case the Iranian ship dispatched to deliver aid to Yemen was attacked.

"The US and Saudi Arabia should know that Iran's self-restraint has a limited,” General Jazzayeri told the Arabic-language TV Alalam on Tuesday evening.

"Attacking the Iranian Red Crescent aid ship will spark war in the region,” he said, noting that “this fire may not be put out or brought under control."

An Iranian ship carrying humanitarian aid supplies, relief workers and peace activists from several countries left the Southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas for Yemen on Monday.

"We are a group of relief workers, physicians and peace activists from the US, Europe and Germany. We are a part of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Red Crescent Society. We are trying to bring medical stuff, flour and water for the Yemeni people," a statement issued by 7 anti-war activists aboard the ship said on Monday.

"A large number of physicians and a few journalists from Iran are accompanying us on the ship and we intend to deliver 2,500 tons of medical supplies to the Hudaydah port on the Red Sea," the statement added according to Fars news agency....almanar.com.lb
