EU Extends Sanctions Against Russia for 6 Months

European Union foreign ministers formally agreed Monday to extend economic sanctions against Russia for an additional six months in response to the country's role in neighboring Ukraine.
The move came during a meeting of the 28-member bloc's foreign ministers in Luxembourg. EU envoys had preliminarily approved the measure last week.

The sanctions target Russia's energy, defense and financial sectors and have been in place since July 2014, some four months after Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula. They will now run through January 31, 2016.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said last week that Russia would respond "on the principle of reciprocity" after the extension was formalized. Analysts said that could mean a further ban on European food imports.

EU spokeswoman Maja Kodijancic said on Twitter that the extension was done "with a view to complete implementation of [the] Minsk agreements."

That cease-fire plan signed in February by Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France calls, in part, for the withdrawal of all heavy weapons and foreign fighters from eastern Ukraine. Observers say the agreement has been repeatedly violated.

  1. Russia will respond to renewal of EU sanctions on reciprocity principle — Kremlin...

Russia will respond to renewal of European Union’s sanctions on the basis of the reciprocity principle, press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

"We reiterate, the reciprocity principle is the basis of our approach in the exchange of sanctions," Peskov said.

"Russia believes these sanctions are unjustified and unlawful. However, we have never initiated sanction measures before and do not initiate them now," Kremlin spokesman said. This practice "does not only prejudice the interests of economic activity participants in our country but also the interests of these countries, that is, interests of taxpayers of the European states," Peskov said............http://tass.ru/en/russia/802929

  2. U.S. calls on NATO to stand together against Russian aggression...

The U.S. will contribute weapons, aircraft and forces, including commandos, for NATO's rapid reaction force, Defence Secretary Ash Carter said Monday, to help Europe defend against security threats, including Russia from the east and violent extremists from the south.

Under the plan, the U.S. will contribute intelligence and surveillance capabilities, special operations forces, logistics, transport aircraft, and a range of weapons support that could include bombers, fighters and ship-based missiles. It would not provide a large ground force.

Carter announced the new details about the U.S. contribution after meeting with defence ministers from Germany, Norway and the Netherlands. Those countries had agreed to provide the initial troops for the so-called very high readiness task force, which was announced last year at the NATO summit in Wales. The U.S. had pledged to support the task force, but NATO has been waiting to hear specifically what America was willing to provide.........AP..............ctvnews.ca
