  1. Greece misses IMF payment deadline...

Greece has missed the deadline for a €1.6bn (£1.1bn) payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), hours after eurozone ministers refused to extend its bailout.

But the ministers said they would discuss a last-minute suggestion from Greece for a new bailout programme.

Greece is the first advanced country to fail to repay a loan to the IMF and is now formally in arrears.

There are fears that this could put Greece at risk of leaving the euro.

The IMF confirmed that Greece had failed to make the payment, shortly after 22:00 GMT on Tuesday.

"We have informed our Executive Board that Greece is now in arrears and can only receive IMF financing once the arrears are cleared," said IMF spokesman Gerry Rice.....BBC

  2. Iran sanctions freeze extended until July 7...

Iran and world powers gave themselves an extra week to reach a nuclear accord, extending a deadline due to expire on Tuesday, while U.S. President Barack Obama said there would be no deal if all pathways to an Iranian nuclear weapon were not cut off.

With talks in the final stretch, Iran’s President Hassan Rowhani also spoke out, saying his country would resume suspended atomic work if the West breaks its promises.

Iran and six world powers are working towards an accord that would see Tehran halt sensitive nuclear work for at least a decade in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions, potentially the biggest breakthrough in decades of hostility between Washington and Tehran.

“Ultimately this is going to be up to the Iranians” to meet the requirements set out by the international community, Obama said during a news conference in Washington.........alarabiya.net

CEO Alexei Miller said Russia stopped delivering gas to Ukraine at 10:00 local time (07:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

  12. Argentina recalls its financial crisis, advises Greece...

......Argentina's financial collapse was so bad that one of every five Argentines was out of work. The peso, which had been tied to the dollar, lost nearly 70 per cent of its value, and banks froze deposits and barricaded behind sheet metal as thousands of protesters unsuccessfully tried to withdraw their savings.

Mr Lavagna said the demonstrations in Greece “are way more peaceful” than in Argentina, where at least 27 people died in protests and looting in December 2001 as the economy unravelled. He said that at the time, Argentina also lacked international support and didn't have the obligations of an economic union like the European Union.

    IWF will "faire Lösung"

  18. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's office summoned the US Ambassador to Germany on Thursday to discuss new allegations about National Security Agency (NSA) spying, according to German media reports.Citing a German government source, German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said Peter Altmaier, chief of staff of Merkel's office, had "invited" US Ambassador John B. Emerson to meet for talks in the Chancellery...

According to the reports, Altmaier wanted to get information and clarification of the latest allegations over US tapping on German politicians and officials.

New documents released by WikiLeaks on Wednesday show that the NSA did not just tap Merkel's phone, but also eavesdropped on German ministers and senior officials.

Partly in collaboration with British secret services, the NSA reportedly targeted 69 phone numbers of the German government and showed particular interest in activities of the ministries of finance, economy and agriculture.

The new revelations have sparked criticism in Germany. Speaking to German Bild newspaper, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble criticized the way in which the US intelligence services acted and called for clarification of the issue.

In addition, Germany's Public Prosecutor's Office is reportedly considering launching new investigation into NSA spying activities.

  22. Tunisia has declared a state of emergency, just over a week after 38 tourists, mainly Britons, died in an attack in the resort city of Sousse....

The state of emergency gives security forces more powers and limits the right of public assembly.

Authorities had already tightened security in the wake of the attack on 26 June, deploying armed officers at hotels and beaches.

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi is due to address the nation later.

Security forces were criticised for not responding more quickly to the attack in Sousse, when a gunman opened fire on tourists on a beach before entering a hotel.

Islamic State (IS) said it was behind the attack, the most deadly in Tunisia's recent history. Those killed included 30 Britons.

In March, two gunmen killed 22 people at the renowned Bardo museum in Tunisia's capital, Tunis.

Analysts say Tunisia has been put at risk by the chaotic situation in neighbouring Libya, and by the threat posed by Tunisians who have gone to fight in Syria and Iraq returning home.

That is certainly the case, but if they say ‘no’ they will have to introduce another currency after the referendum because the euro is not available as a means of payment,” Mr Schulz told Germany’s Deutschlandfunk radio in an interview broadcast today and taped on Thursday.

  30. China shares jump despite Greek vote...

Mainland Chinese shares surged nearly 8% on Monday despite the rest of Asian markets trading lower on Greece's rejection of austerity demands.

The Shanghai Composite was up 2.6% to 3,783.69 after the government announced measures over the weekend to stabilise the tumbling stock markets.

In an unprecedented move, brokerages and fund managers vowed to buy massive amounts of stocks backed by the state.

But, Japan's Nikkei 225 was down 1.3% to 20,281.99 on Greece's "no" vote.

The euro fell across the board after Greek voters overwhelmingly rejected the conditions of a bailout package from its creditors in a referendum, increasing the odds of the country's exit from the eurozone.

The euro was at $1.1055 in Asian trade, recovering from one-month lows it hit earlier in the day.

Investors fled to the safe haven of the yen that rallied against the dollar and euro after Greek voters rejected the bailout terms by a wider margin than expected.

The euro fell 1.5% to a six-week low of 133.700 yen, but then recovered some losses to trade up to 135.41. However, it is still down from Friday's 136.185 yen.

Major commodities such as oil were also down with the price of Brent crude falling more than 1% to $59.72 in Asian trade.

Japanese policymakers on Monday pledged to work closely to guard against financial market volatility after Greek voters rejected eurozone austerity measures.

“The direct economic and financial relations between Japan and Greece are limited. But government and Bank of Japan officials have held discussions early this morning” to ensure Japan responds smoothly to any market response as needed, BOJ Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda said in a statement.

Finance Minister Taro Aso also said that while Japan was in close contact with overseas policymakers on the Greek referendum, it was confident that Europeans have sufficient safeguards in place to respond to market disruptions.

“I understand that European countries … are calling on the Greek government to act responsibly” in the wake of the referendum results, Aso said in a statement.

Greece and its membership in Europe's joint currency faced an uncertain future Monday, with time pressing for the country to reach a bailout deal with creditors after Greeks resoundingly rejected the notion of more austerity in exchange for aid.

With Greek banks running out of cash and facing the danger of collapse within days without new aid, the government in Athens is racing against the clock.

In an effort to facilitate negotiations on a new aid program Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, who had clashed with European officials in the bailout talks, announced his resignation Monday.

Talks on a bailout worth 85 billion euros ($94 billion) will start if Parliament agrees by Wednesday to creditors' demands, including painful tax hikes and pension cuts.

  68. DPRK erects taller launch pad for long-range rocket...

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) erected a taller launch pad for long-range rocket at a rocket base near the west coast, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported Wednesday citing a government official.

Extension works for the 67-meter-high launch tower was nearly completed recently in Tongchang-ri in the DPRK's northwest, the official was quoted as saying. The works began in late 2013 to extend the 50-meter launch pad.

With the extension, the DPRK was estimated to be able to fire long-range rockets twice the size of Unha-3, which was fired into space orbit in December 2012, two months before the DPRK's third nuclear test. The 30-meter-long, three-stage Unha rocket was fired from the Tongchang-ri launch pad.

The official was quoted as saying that the DPRK is likely to use the new launch tower to fire a longer-range rocket than the Unha-3 around the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea on Oct. 10.

Signs of producing longer-range rockets were detected at an arms factory near Pyongyang, another official was quoted as saying.

Seoul said U.N. Security Council resolutions have banned all launches based on the DPRK's ballistic missile technology.

  93. Venezuela supermarket looting leaves one dead, dozens detained...

One person was killed and dozens were detained following looting of supermarkets in Venezuela's southeastern city of Ciudad Guayana on Friday morning, according to Venezuelan authorities.

Shoppers seeking scarce consumer staples including milk, rice and flour broke into a supermarket warehouse on Friday morning, leading businesses in the area to shut their doors, local newspaper Correo del Caroni reported.

President Nicolas Maduro said the violence was premeditated and blamed the United States as being behind it.Maduro said U.S. General John Kelly, Marine Corps commander of the Southern Command, predicted in February that there would be a "social implosion" in Venezuela in July.

"You all know that a military general of the United States doesn't predict," Maduro said on state television. "He orders and the battered Venezuelan right-wing executes."

Speaking at the Pentagon in March, Kelly said that Venezuela might see some change of leadership in the coming months..............reuters.com
