Nuclear restart to pressure Japan in search for waste disposal site (Japan restarts first nuclear power plant since Fukushima)

Following an unpopular return to nuclear power generation, Japan can no longer ignore the elephant in the room: where is the country's highly radioactive nuclear waste going?

The reboot on Tuesday of a nuclear reactor at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Sendai plant comes as Japan struggles to find a final disposal site for high-level nuclear waste. Currently, some 17,000 tons of nuclear waste is sitting in temporary storage pools across the country, and the restart means the generation of even more.

Spent-fuel pools at some nuclear plants will reach their capacity in three years at the earliest.

A spokeswoman at Kyushu Electric said the Sendai plant's storage pools "still have enough room," suggesting the utility is not planning to immediately take further measures. But they are expected to become full in roughly 11 years, according to relevant data.

  • Japan restarts first nuclear power plant since Fukushima...

Japan has restarted its first nuclear reactor under new safety rules following the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

All Japan's nuclear plants were gradually shut down after a series of meltdowns at the Fukushima plant sparked by the tsunami and earthquake.

But after passing stringent new safety tests, Kyushu Electric Power restarted the number one reactor at its Sendai plant on Tuesday morning.

There is still strong public unease about a return to nuclear power.

Protests have been taking place outside the Sendai plant and at Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's residence in Tokyo, about 1,000 km (600 miles) away.

The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo says that after being told a disaster like Fukushima could never happen, public confidence has been shaken.

A total of 25 plants have applied to be restarted, he says, but all are facing legal challenges from concerned locals.............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-33858350
