China unveils cut of troops in WWII event with military parade

China on Thursday commemorated the 70th anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War II with a massive military parade, whipping up nationalist fervor as it faces a host of its own internal problems.

Hundreds of tanks and other armored vehicles rumbled through Tiananmen Square as fighter jets flew in formation overhead amid concerns by China's neighbors and the United States over the country's rapid military expansion and aggressive territorial claims.

In an apparent bid to dispel such fears, Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled a plan to cut the number of its troops by 300,000 in his address just ahead of the parade...
