Hungary says Croatia encouraging illegal migration. -- The Greek stance on the migration and refugee crisis

Croatia is encouraging migrants to illegally cross borders, Hungary's foreign minister said this afternoon, after a convoy of Croatian buses took hundreds of migrants to the Hungarian frontier.

Hungarian police allowed the migrants to pass and put them on buses.

But Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto denied there was any coordination between the two countries.

"Instead of helping people, Croatia is encouraging masses and masses of people to commit a criminal offence – illegal crossing of the border is a criminal offense," Mr Szijjarto told a news conference in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

Hungarian police and soldiers have lined up on the Hungarian side of the border with Croatia at the village of Beremend as Croatian buses offloaded hundreds of migrants and refugees there.

The convoy of more than ten buses was heading towards the eastern Croatian city of Osijek when it unexpectedly turned towards the Hungarian border.

Hungarian soldiers and two humvees mounted with machine guns also took positions at the border crossing as people were getting off the buses.

Croatia’s Prime Minister earlier said his country cannot control the influx of migrants and refugees after more than 13,000 people crossed its borders since Wednesday....

  • Foreign Ministry spokesperson Koutras’ response to journalists’ questions regarding aggressive statements from Hungarian officials concerning the Greek stance on the migration and refugee crisis

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Konstantinos Koutras made the following statement in response to journalists’ questions regarding successive aggressive statements from Hungarian officials concerning the Greek stance on the migration and refugee crisis:

“We find it difficult to witness either the wave of statements from Hungarian officials against our country or, and mainly, what the UN Secretary General characterizes as the “unacceptable” conduct of Hungary’s forces of order against the refugees, including infants, who are living through the drama and misery of war.

The use of violence and armed patrols, and the driving of innocent victims of war into Balkan minefields do not constitute conduct appropriate to a member state of the European Union.

It is obvious that the burden of the current, unprecedented refugee crisis cannot be shouldered by one country alone – in this case, Greece, which is doing everything humanly possible. These urgent circumstance require humanity, cooperation, solidarity and coordination with the other European partners, and not brutal cynicism, provocative statements, the use of violence, or a return to Cold-War walls.”
