Hungary to arrest refugees. Viktor Orban has accused Greece of shirking its responsibility under EU rules

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned on Friday that his police would take tougher action from next week against a wave of migrants who he said had rebelled against authorities, seized railway stations and refused to be registered.

Hungary, a key transit country for migrants and refugees trying to reach richer and more generous European Union countries such as Germany and Sweden, is racing to construct a fence along its border with Serbia by early October to stem the flow.

More than 170,000 migrants have crossed into Hungary from Serbia so far this year. Most try to avoid being registered in Hungary for fear of being stranded there or returned there later on, encouraged by a temporary agreement by Germany and Austria to accept refugees.

"Considering that we are facing a rebellion by illegal migrants, police have done their job in a remarkable way, without using force," Orban told reporters after a meeting with Manfred Weber, chairperson of the European People's Party group in European Parliament.

"They have seized railway stations, refused to give fingerprints, failed to cooperate, and are unwilling to go to places where they would get food, water, accommodation and medical care ... They have rebelled against the Hungarian legal order."

Orban said that, from September 15, when tougher laws on immigration are due to take effect, migrants who cross Hungary's border illegally will be arrested.

He also urged the EU to help Greece, the first EU landing point for the migrants, many of them refugees from conflicts in Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan who head on through FYROM*** and Serbia to Hungary.

Hungary has accused Greece of shirking its responsibility under EU rules, as the first entry point into the bloc, to register and process asylum requests by migrants arriving by boat from Turkey.

Muslim radicals in Germany are trying to recruit some of the growing numbers of asylum seekers reaching the country, according to intelligence services quoted by the German news agency DPA.

The Islamic extremists "are trying to approach the young unaccompanied refugees, who arrive in our country without their families and are particularly looking for contacts and support," a spokesperson for the intelligence service in the southern state of Bavaria told DPA, saying they were targeting young men at rail stations and other sites.

The Islamic extremists "want to take advantage of the insecurity and distress of the refugees," he said.

  1. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will propose his EU counterparts to provide Syrian neighbor-countries with a 3-billion-euro ($3.4 billion) aid to manage migrant crisis...

"I propose that each country paid an additional percent to the EU budget. At the same time, we will reduce the expenses for other aims in total by a percent. This will give us nearly three billion [euro] to support countries neighboring Syria."

The plan to assist Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan will be presented to the EU prime ministers during the next meeting, Orban added.

  3. Germany was set Sunday to reinstate border controls with Austria, media reports said, as Europe's top economy struggled to cope with a record influx of refugees...

Tragedy struck again off the coast of Greece, with 34 more migrants - among them babies and children - drowning when their wooden boat capsized in high winds.

Athens, on the frontline of the massive surge of migrants and refugees trying to reach Europe, angrily dismissed criticism of its handling of the crisis and appealed for outside help.

Local authorities in Germany, which has earned praise for its welcoming stance toward refugees, were meanwhile buckling under the sudden surge of arrivals.

Passport checks had been abolished for countries within Europe's Schengen zone.

However, the German decision to bring back controls is expected to be announced by Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere at a press conference on Sunday evening, several media reports said.

Austria's rail company also said it was suspending trains into Germany........AFP........http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/942242.shtml

  4. At least 28 migrants have drowned off Greece after their boat capsized, Greek authorities said Sunday....

Scores more were rescued near the island of Farmakonisi in the southeastern Aegean Sea, as would-be asylum seekers continue struggling to reach Europe. Nearly 3,000 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea this year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says.

Meanwhile, Austrian police say they rescued 42 people believed to be migrants stowed in a refrigerated flower truck on a highway near the German border on Sunday. Two Iraqis suspected as smugglers were arrested, police said.

Authorities are on high alert after the decomposing remains of 71 people believed to be migrants were found on an eastern Austrian highway last month.

More than 430,000 migrants, including refugees from Syria and Iraq, have crossed the Mediterranean Sea to Europe so far in 2015, according to the IOM......... voanews.com
