Moldova to fulfill its obligations to EU on hosting refugees (PM)

Moldova will fulfill its obligations to the EU in terms of hosting refugees from the Middle East and/or North Africa if it gets requests for granting asylum to them, Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet told a news conference on Friday.

The reporters’ questions and his answers were devoted to one year since the start of practical actions under an agreement on association (AA) between Moldova and the EU.

"Surely we must abide by the EU legislation regarding asylums for refugees in the first place," he said. "In this sense, all the documents that are part of the conditions we fulfilled for easing of the travel visa issuance and for signing and ratifying the AA have been endorsed."

He expressed the hope the flows of refugees heading for Europe would bypass this former Soviet republic, which is known to be one of the least affluent countries in Europe.

"I hope no danger is looming over us in the short term and there’ll be no tidal wave of arriving refugees," Strelet said.

"Most of the refuges are trying to get to wealthier countries and, unfortunately, here’s where we have our own little advantage compared with the latter," he said.
