Russia says bomb brought down Sinai plane; Egypt denies airport workers arrested

Russia's President Vladimir Putin vowed vengeance after Moscow on Tuesday confirmed that a bomb attack brought down a passenger jet over Egypt last month, killing all 224 people on board.

"It is not the first time that Russia confronts barbarous terrorist crimes", Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a meeting late Monday with his security chiefs.

"The murder of our people in Sinai is among the bloodiest crimes in terms of victims. We will not wipe away the tears from our soul and hearts. This will stay with us forever but will not stop us finding and punishing the criminals," he said in comments released Tuesday.

"We will search for them anywhere they might hide. We will find them in any part of the world and punish them," he said, calling the attack "one of the bloodiest crimes".

Russia's security chief Alexander Bortnikov told Putin that the passenger jet was brought down over the Sinai peninsula by a bomb with a force equivalent to one kilo of TNT.

"We can say unequivocally that this was a terrorist attack," Federal Security Service (FSB) head Bortnikov said.

Egyptian security officials announced on Tuesday that two employees of Sharm el Sheikh International Airport had been detained and accused of having links to the attack, according to the Reuters news agency. However in a press conference on Tuesday, Egypt's Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim denied that anyone had been detained.

In response to the bombing Putin pledged to step up air strikes in Syria where Moscow is conducting a bombing campaign it says is targeting the Islamic State group and other "terrorist" groups.

"The combat work of our aviation in Syria must not only be continued. It must be intensified so that the criminals understand that vengeance is inevitable," Putin said.

A group linked to IS had earlier claimed responsibility for downing the plane but Russia had said it was waiting for the official results of an investigation into the tragedy.

Putin ordered Russia's foreign ministry to contact all Moscow's partners for assistance and said that it was counting on "our friends" to help find and punish those responsible for the plane attack.

Russia's federal security service (FSB) on Tuesday said it would pay $50 million for information about "terrorists" who brought down the plane in Sinai last month with 224 people on board.

The FSB appealed for "help in identifying the terrorists" that exploded a bomb on the A321 plane travelling from Egypt to Russia. "There will be a reward of $50 million for information helping to arrest the criminals," it said on its website.

  2. Russia's security chief says an act of terror brought down the Russian A321 airliner in Egypt last month, killing all 224 people on board...

"Traces of foreign explosives" were found on debris from the Airbus plane, FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov told Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mr Putin vowed to "find and punish" those behind the attack over the Sinai peninsula. A branch of so-called Islamic State said it downed the plane.

Nearly all the dead were Russians.

Mr Bortnikov said a bomb had been planted on board the Metrojet plane, equivalent to up to 1kg of TNT. The Kremlin website carried a transcript of the meeting.

The bomb shattered the plane mid-air on 31 October, he said, "which explains the wide dispersal of fuselage pieces".

Mr Putin said that Russia must hunt those responsible "indefinitely, find out who the individuals were".

"We'll look for them everywhere, wherever they are hiding. We'll find them in any corner of the planet and punish them."....BBC
