Russian lawmakers: West’s irresponsible policy leads to strengthening of Islamic State

The West’s irresponsible and faulty policy has resulted in the emergence and strengthening of the Islamic State, according to a draft statement of the Russian State Duma lower parliament house made available to TASS on Monday.

"It is obvious that the irresponsible and faulty policy of the West pursued under the slogan of ‘export of democracy’ has resulted in the emergence and strengthening of the so-called Islamic State. Attempts to use radical groups as a battering-ram to contain unwanted regimes are fraught with further negative scenarios," the document says. "In case no urgent and efficient measures, including of the military character, are taken chaos in the Middle East is threatening to engulf neighboring states and regions in a wave of violence."

The State Duma is expected to consider this draft statement at its session on Tuesday.

The statement also runs that Russian lawmakers are calling on parliaments all across the globe to spare no effort to form an international anti-terrorist coalition.

"State Duma lawmakers call on members of parliaments in Europe, North America, the Middle East and other regions of the world to do their best to have an international anti-terror coalition formed. We must do it to save human lives and realize out moral duty to victims of terror," the document says.

The Islamic State is an Islamic terrorist organization banned in Russia. In 2013-2014, it was known under the name the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and operated mainly in Iraq and Syria. In June 2014, the Islamic State announced the establishment of an "Islamic caliphate" (a state with a Sharia form of government) on the territories it had seized and reduced its name to the Islamic State.

According to the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency, the extremist group numbers around 30,000 people. The Iraqi authorities say however it has up to 200,000 gunmen. Among members of the group are citizens of 80 countries, including France, Great Britain, Germany, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, U.S., Canada, Russia and other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Islamic State militants reportedly control up to 40% of the Iraq’s territory and about 50% of the Syrian territory.
