German Tornado jets arrive at İncirlik air base

Two German tornado reconnaissance planes and a plane carrying military personnel arrived at Turkey's İncirlik base on Thursday, after German lawmakers on Dec. 4 approved a broad non-combat mission to aid the fight by a coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The planes had left the German Air Force's Schleswig base near Jagel on Thursday afternoon accompanied by 40 military personnel. Germany also plan to send four more Tornado planes to İncirlik in the coming days.

After the terrorist attacks in Paris on Nov. 13, which killed 130 people, Germany planned to send six Tornado reconnaissance planes, a tanker aircraft and a frigate to help protect a French aircraft carrier which had previously been deployed in the Persian Gulf, but the country will not actively engage in combat.

A maximum contingent of 1,200 soldiers was also approved, soldiers who will serve as support troops in Turkey and elsewhere, including at the coalition's headquarters of operations in Qatar and Kuwait.
