No immediate casualities and injuries were reported as strong tremors were felt in different parts of Pakistan on Monday after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Tajikistan.
According to the local media, the strong tremors were mainly felt in Pakistan's northwestern areas along the Pak-Afghan border, including Swat, Malakand, Peshawar and Chitral, as well as the country's capital Islamabad.
The National Seismic Monitoring Center said those were the shocks of a 7.1-magnitude earthquake which hit Tajikistan with a focal depth of 88 km. The US Geological Survey put the earthquake intensity at 7.2 magnitude.
The tremors created panic among local people who rushed out of their houses and work places to open areas. However, no loss of life or property has been reported yet.
Pakistan is one of the most earthquake-prone regions of the world with high vulnerability to earthquakes.
On Oct. 26, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan, killing at least 280 people, wounding over 1,900 others.
In October 2005, a powerful 7.4-magnitude quake jolted parts of the country, killing over 80,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands of others homeless.
