Sevastopol governor: Crimea to leave Ukraine’s trade boycott unnoticed

Crimea will experience no shortage of goods or services however hard Ukraine might be trying to boycott local retailers, because the peninsula has already shifted to supplies from its own providers or goods manufactured in mainland Russia, the governor of Sevastopol, a city and naval base in Crimea enjoying the status of Russia’s constituent region in its own right, Sergey Menyailo, told a Russian radio station.

"We’ve shifted to Russian products long ago," Menyailo said following the Ukrainian government’s decision to sever all trading relations with Crimea. "Whatever statements Yatsenyuk may be making will remain important only for himself. We don’t care."

The Ukrainian government on Wednesday made a decision in favour of a trade boycott of Crimea. In his opening remarks at a meeting of the Cabinet Yatsenyuk said that the ban on the movement of goods across the border would not apply to individuals’ personal belongings, socially important items and humanitarian aid. The Ukrainian government’s decision will take effect in 30 days’ time.

  1. Russia's Putin orders suspension of free trade zone with Ukraine...

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday ordered his government to suspend Russia's free trade zone with Ukraine from Jan. 1, making good on Moscow's threats to Kiev which seeks closer ties with the European Union.

Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula last year and is accused by Kiev of fomenting a bloody conflict with pro-Moscow separatists in the east of the country. It has staunchly opposed plans to launch an EU-Ukraine free trade pact.

Senior Russian officials said this month Moscow would probably have to penalize Ukrainian imports and impose a non-preferential trade regime if Kiev's planned free trade pact with Europe went ahead on Jan. 1....REUTERS...todayonline.com
