Sino-Japanese ties still fragile, says Chinese leader

Relations between China and Japan have recently improved, but the momentum is still fragile, China's top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng said in Beijing on Friday.

Yu, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks while meeting a Japanese delegation led by Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party Tanigaki Sadakazu and Secretary-General of the Komei Party Yoshihisa Inoue.

Yu said the ruling parties of the two countries should take the political leadership to ensure the two sides abide by the four political documents and the four-point consensus, properly handle historical issues, enhance political mutual trust, expand economic and trade cooperation and cultural exchanges, and realize continued stable and sound development of bilateral ties.

The ruling party exchange mechanism, established in 2006, played an important role in promoting the improvement and development of bilateral relationship, Yu said.

Tanigaki and Yoshihisa agreed that the regular meeting mechanism is an important channel to strengthen communication and promote mutual trust. They also voiced willingness to preserve and consolidate the momentum of improving relations and expand bilateral cooperation.

Tanigaki, Yoshihisa and their delegates were in Beijing for a two-day meeting between the Japanese parties and the Communist Party of China, the first between the two countries' ruling parties in six years.

Japan's defense budget for the next fiscal year is likely to top 5 trillion yen ($40 billion) for the first time, government sources and reports said Friday, as the military prepares for an expanded role under new security legislation.
