Ireland launches action plan for jobs in 2016

Ireland on Monday launched the new year's action plan for jobs, aimed at creating 200,000 extra jobs by 2020.

The plan is the current government's fifth action plan for jobs since its inception in 2012. It outlines 304 actions which will be implemented by 16 departments and over 60 agencies to bring the number of people at work to 2.18 million by 2020.

"For this year, this 2016 action plan seeks to add another 50,000 jobs to the economy. It will be an important stepping stone in our recovery towards full employment. It is a challenge, but one that we have to deliver on," Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said at the launch of the plan.

"The creation of 200,000 new jobs is the first step in our long term economic plan. It is essential to creating a strong economy so that we can lower taxes on workers and invest in public services," Kenny said.

Kenny is also leader of Fine Gael (the United Ireland Party), which formed a coalition government with the Labor Party after the 2011 general election.

"The recovery is not yet complete and could easily go into reverse if not managed correctly. But this government of Fine Gael and Labor have a plan to keep the recovery going," he said.

Five years ago, Ireland's unemployment was above 15 per cent. It is now under nine per cent for the first time since 2008. The current government has more than exceeded the targets it set itself in the first action plan for jobs when it aimed to add 100,000 jobs by 2016.

With more than 135,000 additional jobs in place, The government is now committed to working to ensure that it has 2.1 million people in employment in this country by 2018, two years ahead of schedule. In 2016 alone, the government is aiming to add 50,000 jobs, another step in the journey towards full employment in this country.
