A statement by the Russian President that NATO had to refuse to accept new members are not true, according to Alexander Vershbow, NATO Deputy Secretary.
“Russia says NATO promised not to enlarge. Simply untrue. Every nation has the right to choose its alliances. Open Door equals historic success,” Vershbow tweeted on Monday in a followup to the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interview with the German Bild where he stated that NATO had to refuse from accepting new members after the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, in order not to create new demarcation lines.
“NATO missile defence is not directed against Russia and they know it. It’s about growing missile threats beyond Europe, which are growing,” the NATO official added.
