US Vice President Joe Biden arrived in İstanbul on Thursday night for a two-day visit when he is scheduled to have talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu.
Biden’s jet landed at İstanbul Atatürk Airport around 9:30 p.m.
Among the main agenda items of Biden in Turkey will be the efforts to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Washington and Ankara have been discussing for months how to seal the last piece of unsecured border, a 98-kilometer-long (60 mile-long) stretch that has served as a throughway for terrorist ISIL fighters, black-market goods and war material.
ISIL controls the Syrian side of the border, and the effort to secure it assumed new urgency after the deadly Paris attacks in November last year. Some of the Paris attackers used or attempted to use the Syria-Turkey border to travel between ISIL-held territory and Europe, the officials said.
