Japan to provide 1 million USD in disaster relief aid to China's Taiwan following deadly quake

The Japanese government on Monday said it would provide 1 million US dollars in aid for China's Taiwan following a large earthquake that struck on Saturday killing around 40 people.

With more than 500 also reported injured, Japan's offer of financial aid to the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China, has been earmarked to help provisions for disaster relief and reconstruction purposes, said Japan's top government spokesperson Yoshida Suga.

Suga added that Japan would provide personnel from its fire service and Self-Defense Forces should China's Taiwan request such assistance.

According to media reports, more than 100 people are still believed to be trapped inside an apartment complex in Tainan that was toppled by the devastating magnitude 6.4 quake.
