EgyptAir Flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo 'disappears from radar'

An EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo has disappeared from radar, the Egyptian airline says.

It says there are 59 passengers and 10 crew members on board Flight MS804.

The aircraft was flying at 37,000ft (11,300m) when it went missing over the eastern Mediterranean. An official said the plane lost contact with radar at 02:45 Cairo time (00:45 GMT).

The company said it would issue an update "when more information becomes available".

EgyptAir said the plane disappeared about 10 miles (16km) into Egyptian air space.

According to the flightradar24.com website, which tracks passenger flights around the globe, the plane is an Airbus A320.

    The search operation is being co-ordinated with the Greek authorities.

    In a later update, EgyptAir said that three children were among those on board the plane.

    Aviation analyst Alex Macheras told the BBC that Airbus A320s were regularly used for short-haul budget flights and had "an amazing safety record".

    The EgyptAir aircraft left Paris at 23:09 local time on Wednesday (21:09 GMT) and was scheduled to arrive in the Egyptian capital soon after 03:00 local time on Thursday.

  2. A Greek aviation official told the AFP news agency that the plane crashed "around 130 nautical miles" off the southern Greek island of Karpathos, although this has not been confirmed...

    Both the Greek and Egyptian armed forces are involved in the search for the plane. France says it is sending boats and planes to help in the operation....BBC

  3. Families of passengers and the Egyptian prime minister arrived at Cairo International Airport shortly after dawn while the Egyptian and Greek military scrambled aircraft and boats to search for the plane...

    The airline said on its Twitter account that Flight MS804, departed Paris at 11.09pm CEST (9.09pm Irish time).

    It disappeared at 2.30am local time at an altitude of 37,000ft in Egyptian airspace, some 280km from the Egyptian coastline, before it was due to land at 3.15am, the airline said......rte.ie

  4. A Greek defence ministry source said authorities were also investigating an account from the captain of a merchant ship who reported a “flame in the sky” around 130 nautical miles south of the island of Karpathos...

    The weather was clear at the time the plane disappeared, according to weather reports.

    Speed and altitude data from aviation website FlightRadar24.com indicated the plane was cruising at the time it disappeared.

    French President Francois Hollande's office said the French leader had just spoken to his Egyptian counterpart and that both sides would cooperate closely.

    Under UN aviation rules, Egypt will automatically lead an investigation into the accident assisted by countries including France, if it is confirmed that an Airbus jet was involved.

    "We are in close contact with the Egyptian authorities, both civil and military," French Prime Minister Manuel Valls told French radio.

    "At this stage, no theory can be ruled out regarding the causes of the disappearance."....rte.ie

  6. In its latest press release, EgyptAir “denies all misleading information published by news websites and on the social media channels regarding the reasons of the disappearance of EGYPTAIR flight MS804 and the company confirms that the reason of disappearance hasn't been yet confirmed.”

  8. Greece is deploying military aircraft and a frigate to an area in the southern Mediterranean where the EgyptAir aircraft vanished from radar screens, its defence ministry said.

    The search for the missing EgyptAir plane was taking place at sea, about 130 nautical miles southeast of the island of Karpathos, the Greek defence ministry said.

    A defence ministry source said authorities were also investigating an account from the captain of a merchant ship who reported seeing a "flame in the sky" in the area.

  10. Egypt's army said it is taking all the necessary procedures to find the missing plane by dispatching a number of rescue and search jets along with navy vessels specialised in rescue and relief operations...

    A high alert has been imposed in military hospitals and the army is currently in coordination with the cabinet and the foreign and civil aviation ministers to provide the needed support.

    The army spokesman said the search for the disappeared plane is taking place where the plane reportedly went missing, with the participation of jets from Greece.

  14. At a press conference in Paris, French President Francois Hollande says that all the information gathered so far indicates that flight MS804 crashed - but, he says, no hypothesis as to the cause has been ruled out..

    "The information we have gathered - ministers, members of government and, of course, the Egyptian authorities - confirm, sadly, that it has crashed. It is lost."

Greece's Defence Minister Panos Kammenos told a news conference: "At 3.39am (local time) the course of the aircraft was south and south-east of Kassos and Karpathos (islands)..immediately after it entered Cairo FIR and made swerves and a descent I describe; 90 degrees left and then 360 degrees to the right".

    He said the plane fell 22,000 feet and spun sharply before disappearing from radar.

Egypt's National Security Council, headed by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, decided to continue the search efforts through Egyptian military jets and navy vessels, and to work on uncovering the circumstances behind the plane's disappearance as soon as possible in cooperation with France and Greece...

    The council, attended by several ministers including the civil aviation minister, also decided to mandate the government with offering all means of aid to the families of passengers and crew members, and called on the crisis management centre at EgyptAir to follow up on the developments and announce any new details

The French newspaper Le Figaro quotes a French border police source as saying that investigators will be focusing their attention on ground crew at Charles de Gaulles airport, to establish whether any airport employees posed a security risk. The source said that, in the past, a number of Salafists - ultraconservative Muslims - had been detected among those with access to the areas used for the loading and unloading of aircraft.

    Le Figaro also recalled that last December, the head of the Paris airports authority, Augustin de Romanet, announced that since the beginning of 2015 security clearance had been withdrawn from almost 70 employees who had worked in the most secure areas of the main Paris airports, citing one of the reasons as "radicalisation".

  21. Egypt's Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy said in a press conference that Egypt does not refute the assumption that the missing EgyptAir aircraft might have crashed due to a terrorist attack or a malfunction or any other scenario.

    Fathy stressed that they will continue to say that the Airbus 320 is “missing until the debris is found.”

  22. Egypt's president Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has ordered the country's civil aviation ministry and military to take all necessary measures to locate debris from the missing plane.

    In a statement issued by his office, Mr Sisi also ordered an investigative committee formed by the civil aviation ministry to start investigating the causes of the plane's disappearance.

    Greek and Egyptian naval forces and the British Royal Air Force have been combing the waters in the southern Mediterranean Sea.
