Leicester City wins English top division for 1st time

Leicester City clinched their first-ever English first division title on Monday, as second-place Tottenham Hotspur was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

Spurs needed to beat the Blues to have any chance of overtaking Leicester in the two remaining matches of the Premier League season.

The result left Tottenham with 70 points, seven behind Leicester City, who won seven of their last nine matches in the 2014-2015 season to avoid relegation.

The Foxes could have won the title on Sunday, but managed only a 1-1 draw against perennial Premier League champions Manchester United at Old Trafford.


  • Last August, British bookmakers put the odds of Leicester's winning the league at 5,000-1.

The club, which was playing in the third division just seven years ago, raised eyebrows last summer by firing the coach who led them to safety, Nigel Pearson, in favor of Claudio Ranieri, 64, a veteran manager with not a single title to his credit...
