Norbert Hofer winning 51.9% of vote in Austrian presidential polls

Norbert Hofer of the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria is scoring 51.9% of the vote at the second round of presidential elections in Austria, the Austrian interior ministry said on Sunday after counting ballot papers from all polling stations.

Hofer’s rival, Alexander Van der Bellen, the former leader of the Austrian Green Party, is scoring 48.1% of votes.

These data however do not include votes cast by mail. Results of counting these votes will be announced on May 23 and may impact the final polling result.

The voter turnout in the second round of voting was 72%, with 60.7% of eligible voters showing up at polling stations on Sunday. The rest cast their votes by mail. The Austrian central electoral commission issued 885,000 such ballot cards.

According to extrapolated data released by the APA news agency, Hofer may count on support from 50.22% of the voters, and Van der Bellen may win 49.78% of the vote.
