"Russia - Islamic World" group to discuss anti-terrorism fight

Participants in the session of the Group of Strategic Vision "Russia - Islamic World" will discuss the situation in the Middle East and fight against terrorism and extremism, Russian Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large Konstantin Shuvalov told TASS on Thursday.

"The Group of Strategic Vision ‘Russia - Islamic World’ resumed working last year. Another session took place in June last year after a long pause. Today, after a year, we welcome members of the group in Kazan," Shuvalov said.

The main task of the group is to use reserves "that boost work not only at governmental but also at non-governmental level in Muslim countries in the interests of developing their relations with Russia and establishing broader humanitarian ties," he added.

"We expect the second session, on the one hand, will sum up the results of the year that has already passed, will set priorities for future activities," Shuvalov noted. "Along with that, the discussion will be held on the situation in the Middle East, a very worrisome situation. We will also discuss issues of fighting against extremism and terrorism."

The diplomat noted that members of the group "Russia - Islamic World" are politicians, "retired but authoritative politicians," representatives of academic circles, leaders of religious organizations. "We hope that the composition of the group will change in the future, new people ready to work in their countries will come," he concluded.

The session of the Group of Strategic Vision "Russia - Islamic World" will take place in Kazan on May 25-28. Among participants in the session will be representatives of 30 countries and leading Russian experts.

  1. Lavrov: Gulf states favor coordinated action of Russia, US-led coalition on Syria...

The Gulf Arab states have come out in favor of coordinated action of Russia and the US-led coalition on Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday after a session of the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council strategic dialog.
"We’re unanimous that the threat of terrorism and extremism requires uncompromising counteraction to prevent the triumph of the plans nurtured by the IS, Jabhat al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda and similar groupings," the Russian foreign minister said.

"We once again drew partners’ attention to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative to form a broad anti-terrorist front under the UN auspices, and within this context the participants in the session welcomed creation of an Islamic coalition by Saudi Arabia and came out in favor of stronger coordinated action of Russia and the US-.led coalition on fight against terrorism in Syria," the minister said.

Lavrov has pointed out that Russia and the United States have reached some progress in coordinating their operations on the battlefield in Syria but true coordination has not yet been established.

"This coordination has not yet been finally established. There is progress in coordinating actions already on the battlefield from the Syrian airspace," Lavrov said.

"But we’re moving slower than we would like to," the Russian foreign minister said.

According to the minister, the US has pledged to achieve separation of the Syrian opposition and Jebhat al-Nusra terrorist group (banned in Russia) soon but this has not yet happened.....http://tass.ru/en/world/878251
