Security Council: US refusal to coordinate war on terrorists manifests double standards

The United States’ refusal to coordinate with Russia strikes against terrorist groups in Syria is a manifestation of a double standards policy and attempts to classify terrorists as "good" and "bad," Security Council Deputy Secretary Yevgeny Lukyanov has said.

"Of course, it is [a manifestation of double standards]," he told the media. "There are shades of national interests everywhere. This means they understand some things differently. They think that there are 'good' terrorists and there are 'bad" ones.'

"I should say that in Syria there is a sound opposition and there are terrorist groups," Lukyanov said. "We cooperate with the sound opposition. More than a hundred cities have joined truce. They are seriously-minded combatants who have realized the interests of their people. As for Jabhat al-Nusra, or the Islamic State [or daesh], the interests of the Syrian people are not in the first place for them, I believe."

Asked if the United States’ refusal would be painful for Russia, Lukyanov said it would be correct to discuss the "question of painfulness" for Jabhat al-Nusra only.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu last week came forward with a proposal to US defense officials and the US-led coalition to deliver joint air strikes on terrorists in Syria from May 25. According to the minister, Russia reserves the right to deliver unilateral strikes from May 25 on militants who failed to join the ceasefire in Syria.
