Wreckage from EgyptAir plane found south of Greek island of Karpathos

Greek rescue teams have found parts of the wreckage from the Airbus A320 EgyptAir plane around 50 miles (80 kilometers) south east of the Greek island of Karpathos, according to the Greek ministry of defense.

The EgyptAir plane disappeared this morning while flying over the Mediterranean as it covered the route between Paris and Cairo.

The ill-fated plane was traveling with 66 people aboard, including 30 Egyptians and 15 French, among other nationalities.

Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy said "Let's not try to jump to the side that is trying to identify this as a technical failure - on the contrary. The situation may point - and I say 'may' because I don't want to speculate and I don't want to go to assumptions like others - but if you analyze the situation properly, the possibility of having a different action, or having a terror attack, is higher than the possibility of having a technical."

  • The head of the Russian Federal Security Service, Alexander Bortnikov said that every factor surrounding the incident suggests the likelihood that the plane was brought down by an act or terror.

Earlier in the day, the Paris prosecutor's office announced on Thursday that it has opened an investigation into the incident.

The opening of an investigation in France is a standard procedure when there are French victims abroad.

French President Francois Hollande said on Thursday that "the plane has crashed" and insisted that no hypothesis, including terrorism, can be favored over another.

"Unfortunately the information we have ... confirms to us that the plane came down and is lost. No hypothesis can be ruled out, nor can any be favored over another," Hollande said.

The EgyptAir flight MS804 departed from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris at 11.04 p.m. local time and was flying to Cairo international airport.

Among the 56 passengers on board the plane were 30 Egyptian nationals, 15 French, two Iraqis, one Briton, Belgian, Kuwaiti, Saudi, Sudanese, Chadian, Portuguese, Algerian and Canadian.
