UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn refused to resign Tuesday after Labour MPs passed a vote of no confidence in his leadership with 172 voting in favor, 44 against and four abstentions.
"I was democratically elected leader of our party for a new kind of politics by 60% of Labour members and supporters, and I will not betray them by resigning.
Today's vote by MPs has no constitutional legitimacy," Corbyn said in a statement.
The no confidence vote was called after around 20 members of Corbyn's shadow cabinet resigned amid political turmoil in Britain following a vote to leave the European Union.
The vote is non-binding and his removal would still have to go before party members but experts say he is struggling to survive after a slew of criticism of his lukewarm campaigning for Britain to stay in the bloc.
