France to create National Guard to preserve security amid high terror alert

French President Francois Hollande on Thursday said a National Guard would be formed from existing reservists to help promote security in the country after two terrorist attacks took place this month.

Hollande decided a parliamentary consultation on the creation of the guard would take place in September "so that this force can be created as quickly as possible to protect French people," said a press release issued by his office.

In the wake of the truck attack in Nice on Bastille Day in which 84 people were killed by a man claiming to have links with the Islamic State, the French president called on all "patriotic citizens" to become reservists to help relieve exhausted security forces.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Wednesday that 2,500 French people had already enlisted in the operational reserves.
