Germany’s military has initiated a pilot program training over 100 Syrian migrants for civilian roles in the areas of technology, medicine, and logistics aimed at enabling them to eventually aid in the reconstruction of their war-ravaged country.
"The idea is that they will go back to Syria one day and help with the reconstruction" of Syria, Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen told Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper.
Syrian refugees are not eligible to work as soldiers, von der Leyen said, but are permitted to carry out civilian tasks within the military. Once Syria has a responsible government in place Germany could also play a role in training its security forces, she said.
It was not immediately clear whether the military's program would be expanded to accomodate the record 1.1 million migrants and refugees let in to Germany last year, Reuters reported....
