Piraeus port : Makeshift refugee camp at Greek port completely cleared

The last group of migrants living at a makeshift camp at the port of Piraeus was taken to government centers in other parts of Greece, authorities said Wednesday.

The port hosted Greece's second makeshift camp, and sheltered some 5,000 people at full capacity.

  • Of the 1,039 remaining at the camp, 68 were sent to the northwest city of Trikala, 74 to a former military base in Inofita, and the rest sent to various other places by bus.

Authorities have now begun the clean-up operation of the area.

When the Balkan route was closed in February, Piraeus became the first mainland territory reached by many refugees, and a place where they would stay for months, unable to continue their journeys.

Clearing the camp has been a priority of the Greek government due to the economic and touristic importance of the infrastructure.
