The actions of all states in Syria must comply with the international law and be in coordination with the Syrian government

The actions of all states in Syria must comply with the International law and must be in coordination with the Syrian government, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian parliament’s upper house Konstantin Kosachev said.

“Russia finds it crucial that all its actions as well as actions of other states in Syria must comply with the international law, and there are two absolute circumstances that allow a military operation in a foreign state to comply with the international law. That is either a decision of the UN Security Council or a direct request of the country’s legitimate authorities”, Kosachev told Russia’s Izvestiya newspaper in an interview published on Monday.

He stressed that “In case of Russian military operation in Syria there was at the request of President Bashar al-Assad ,” ruling out any new formal international coalitions in Syria without appropriate UN Security Council resolutions or a request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Russian official pointed out that the positions of Russia and US on defining terrorist groups in Syria are narrowing, saying “They [positions] are narrowing. They have not narrowed yet but there is a substantial conversation on the issue that we were lacking before.”

“Earlier we were offered to adopt the classification of events that was comfortable to the United States and their allies as a matter of course. Everything offered by Russia … was not considered, was denied. Now checking facts, judgments and lists are being carried out. That is a very difficult process”, he added.
