Turkey can hold suspects without charge for up to 30 days: In normal times stands at a maximum of four days

Turkey can hold suspects in detention without charge for up to 30 days under its state of emergency imposed in the wake of the failed coup aimed at ousting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, an official statement said on Saturday.



The suspects can be held for up to 30 days before being taken to a judge to decide whether to remand them in custody, said an announcement in the official gazette, where all laws and decrees appear when they come into force.

Activists including Amnesty International had warned Turkey against expanding the detention period, which in normal times stands at a maximum of four days.

The statement added 1,043 private schools and 1,229 associations and foundations will be shut down under the state of emergency.

Turkey blames the coup attempt on the organization of US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen whose influence runs deep in the Turkish education and legal systems.

According to the authorities, 10,410 people have been detained so far, including mainly soldiers but also police, judges, prosecutors and civil servants...

    Les gardes à vue pourront durer jusqu'à 30 jours pour les personnes soupçonnées d'implication dans le putsch manqué du 15 juillet en Turquie, selon un décret sur l'état d'urgence paru samedi au Journal officiel.

    11 000 personnes en garde à vue

    "La durée de la garde à vue ne pourra pas excéder 30 jours à compter de l'arrestation du suspect", selon le décret. La durée légale est de quatre jours. Le ministre de la Justice Bekir Bozdag avait évoqué vendredi une extension à "sept-huit jours", voire plus dans le cadre de l'état d'urgence en vigueur depuis jeudi.

    Vendredi, s'adressant par téléphone à ses partisans réunis à Sakarya, le président Recep Tayyip Erdogan a indiqué que 11 000 personnes avait été placées en garde à vue depuis l'échec du putsch qui a fait 265 morts, dont 24 putschistes.

    Par ailleurs, le décret dissout plusieurs milliers de structures ou d'institutions, notamment des établissements d'éducation, considérés comme liés au prédicateur en exil Fethullah Gülen, accusé par Ankara d'avoir ourdi le putsch, ce qu'il nie....rtbf.be

  2. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has extended the period in which suspects can be detained without charge to 30 days, an official statement says...

    The statement also ordered the closure of more than 1,000 private schools and more than 1,200 associations.

    It follows last week's failed coup attempt against Mr Erdogan and the subsequent declaration of a state of emergency.
