About 30 pct of Portuguese miss out on holidays abroad due to financial reasons

About 5.9 million Portuguese, or more than half of the country's total population, did not go abroad for holidays in 2015, data released by the National Institute of Statistics show.

More than 3.2 million people did not go abroad to travel due to financial reasons.

Most of them aged between 45 and 64. Meanwhile, more than 300,000 Portuguese failed to leave for overseas trips because of health issues, Portugal's Lusa News Agency quoted the institute as saying on Saturday.

About 11 percent of the 5.9 million people, or 659,000, were unemployed when the data were collected.

However, the number of Portuguese travelling abroad for holidays in 2015 exceed that of 2011 when the country signed a 78-billion-euro($86.48 billion) bailout program with international creditors.

That year, 63.1 percent of the country's 10.46 million population chose not to travel abroad.
