Final debate of Brazilian Senate appears to favor ousting Rousseff

The Brazilian Senate on Tuesday began to build a clear majority in favor of impeaching President Dilma Rousseff, who will be voted on Wednesday morning.

Of the first 48 senators who went through the rostrum of speakers, 31 declared that they would vote in favor of dismissing the president, while 18 were opposed and the other 3 did not say, though they indicated opposition to Rousseff.

The final session of the debate, in which 66 senators signed up to speak for 10 minutes each, began on Tuesday morning and took 14 hours.

In order to approve the dismissal, a qualified two-thirds majority, equivalent to 54 votes among the 81 senators, will be necessary.

The President of the Supreme Federal Court Ricardo Lewandowski, who presides over the impeachment as a constitutional guarantee, set the time for the final vote session on Wednesday at 11am local time (2pm GMT).

If two-thirds of the senators vote in favor of the dismissal, Rousseff will lose the office and Michel Temer, who assumed the presidential powers and duties as acting president since May, will be in charge.
