Greece asks Brussels for backup plan on refugee agreement with Turkey. We need a "Plan B", Mouzalas said

The Greek government called on Brussels for an alternative immigration plan with Turkey, the country's migration minister said on Wednesday.

The EU needs to be prepared for what it would do if Turkey reopens its borders to refugees, Greek Migration Minister Ioannis Mouzalas told German newspaper Bild.

"We need a Plan B", Mouzalas said, while calling for a greater commitment when it comes to the reception of asylum seekers.

Refugees must be shared among all EU member states equally, the minister added.

As part of the current agreement, Turkey has to take back refugees who arrived to the Greek islands illegally via its territory, in exchange for up to 6 billion euros ($6.72 billion) in EU funding.

For every Syrian migrant sent back to Turkey, another Syrian refugee can legally leave the war-torn country and travel directly to the EU.

The agreement also included the abolition of visas, which was going to come into effect in June.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Sunday that if visa requirements for Turkish citizens are not removed by October, his country will be "obliged" to distance itself from the agreement on the readmission of refugees.

The agreement on visas is still pending as Brussels considers that Ankara has not fulfilled all the requirements and needs to bring its anti-terrorism laws up to European standards.
