Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed on Wednesday that the Kremlin was behind the airstrike in Aleppo on Tuesday that killed so-called "Islamic State" spokesperson Abu Mohammad al-Adnani.
The ministry said a Su-34 plane targeted a group of about 40 ISIS terrorists with which Adnani was traveling.
The United States confirmed on Tuesday that it had targeted Adnani in a strike that day.
In Washington, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said authorities were "still assessing the results of the strike."
Should Adnani's death be confirmed, it "would mark another significant blow to ISIL," he added in a statement.
Cook said the strike took place in Al-Bab, in the province of Aleppo.
ISIS media sources acknowledged on Tuesday that al-Adnani, whose real name was Taha Sobhi Fallaha, was killed in Aleppo countryside.
