On Wednesday, the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) released the results of a joint probe into chemical weapons attacks in Syria in 2014 and 2015 that said the Syrian government was allegedly involved in two and the Daesh terrorist group, outlawed in Russia, in one attack [2-1].
Churkin described the report as "thorough" and said "we have to study it and see what comes out of it." The Russian diplomat also said he agreed with US envoy to UN Samantha Power "to get together and see what can be done on the basis of this report."
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with numerous opposition factions and Islamic extremist groups fighting the Syrian Army and other government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad.
