17 senior Socialists resign from executive committee to oppose party leader

A group of Spanish Socialist Party leaders submitted their resignations from the party's executive committee on Wednesday in a bid to oust the current secretary general.

The group, made up of 17 executive committee members, quit in protest against party leader Pedro Sanchez, following his recent announcement that the party is to hold internal primary elections and a party convention.

The 17 senior leaders considered Sanchez's plan was a ploy to try and consolidate his dwindling power inside the party.

The Socialists' federal policy secretary, Antonio Pradas, and their immigration secretary, Eva Matarin, were the prominent leaders tasked with presenting the resignations at the party's national headquarters in Madrid.

The resignations could effectively disband the executive committee, the party's top governing body.

Given that the party leader _ its secretary general _ derives his power from the committee, the resignations could trigger Sanchez's ouster and replacement.

A sector of the Socialist Party that is critical of Sanchez, spearheaded by regional leaders _ known in Spain as party "barons" _ has been increasingly opposed to Sanchez's strategy of voting against acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's investiture.

They believe the Socialists should abstain in the next parliamentary vote to invest Rajoy, thus allowing the conservative candidate to renew his term in office.
