German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier proposed to introduce a no-fly zone over Syria in order to make the ceasefire regime in the war-torn country last, as quoted by the ministerial press service on Thursday.
"If the [Syrian] ceasefire has at least a chance at all, it can be realized only trough temporary but complete cessation of all military aircraft activities over Syria — at least for three, better for seven days," Steinmeier said Wednesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. On September 9, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov brokered a cessation of hostilities in Syria that took effect three days later.
On Monday, the Syrian army declared the end of ceasefire regime blaming militants for numerous violations that made the cessation of hostilities unreasonable.
