Germany and "its partners" cannot see peaceful Syria led by Assad

Germany and its partners say consider is impossible to have peaceful Syria led by Bashar Assad, Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in an interview with Funke Mediengruppe, published on Monday.

The foreign minister said the involvement of Moscow in the situation in Syria had stabilized and strengthened the regime of the Syrian president. "This does not change anything in our position and positions of our partners, according to which we cannot imagine peaceful Syria led by Assad," Steinmeier said.

The minister expressed hope Russia and the US would reach agreement on truce in Syria.

"Russia may demonstrate now it is truly interested in stopping the fights in Syria," he said.

"Moscow, like anybody else, realizes the Syrian crisis cannot be settled by military means," he added.
