Most South Koreans favor nuclear arms to counter threats from North Korea

Six out of every ten South Koreans are in favor of the country developing nuclear weapons, according to a survey published Friday.

Fifty-eight percent of citizens said they support South Korea becoming a nuclear state to counter Kim Jong-un's regime, while 34 percent oppose it, pollster Gallup Korea said.

The nationwide survey, conducted among more than 1,000 respondents, shows that 75 percent of South Koreans aged 60 years and above are in favor of nuclear arms. Thirty-nine percent of those aged between 20 and 30 years are against it.

The survey shows growing support for nuclearization as compared to January, when 54 percent of South Koreans backed the development of nuclear arms.

On Sept. 9, North Korea conducted its most powerful nuclear test to date, and claimed to have successfully tested nuclear warheads that could be mounted on missiles, giving rise to fears of a possible lethal attack by the Communist regime.

Several lawmakers belonging to the ruling Saenuri Party have asked the government to consider developing its own nuclear weapons program, an idea now gaining support in political circles.

South Korea has a military agreement with the United States, which has pledged its commitment to defend it in case of an attack by North Korea.

The US has said it will use nuclear weapons only if North Korea uses them first.
