US President Barack Obama on Friday vetoed a bill allowing 9/11 families to sue Saudi Arabia, risking public backlash and rare congressional rebuke.
Expressing "deep sympathy" for the families of the victims, Obama said the law would nonetheless be "detrimental to US national interests" and undermine the principle of sovereign immunity.
"We believe this is a bad bill," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest earlier on Friday. "It's why the president's going to veto it."
The White House argued the legislation would undermine sovereign immunity and potentially expose US officials and service members to litigation.
The government of Saudi Arabia, a US ally but also home nation to 15 of the 19 hijackers, has worked hard to see the bill defeated.
The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act was approved in the House by unanimous voice vote earlier this month, some four months after its Senate passage — and two days before the 15th anniversary of 9/11.
Republican nominee Donald Trump has already tried to paint Obama and his would-be successor Hillary Clinton as weak on terrorism.
