Suicide bomber kills at least 20 in Pakistan mosque. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

A suicide bomber has killed at least 20 people and wounded more than 30 others during Friday prayers at a Pakistan mosque in a tribal area bordering Afghanistan, local officials said.

“At least 20 people have been killed and more than 30 others wounded,” deputy chief of Mohmand tribal district administration Naveed Akbar told AFP, adding that the bomber came in as Friday prayers were in progress and blew himself up in the main hall. A curfew was later imposed in the area.

“The suicide bomber was in crowded mosque, he shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’, and then there was a huge blast,” Akbar  told Reuters. He said rescuers were transporting the dead and wounded to nearby hospitals.

Earlier, a senior tribal administration official told AFP that “the Friday prayer was in progress at the mosque when a suicide bomber blew himself up killing at least 16 worshippers and wounding 35 others.”

He added: “The area is remote and so far I have received only this information from our sources via wireless.”

Another regional official confirmed the blast and said at least 24 people were wounded.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Taliban militants stormed a school in Peshawar in December 2014, killing more than 150 people, mostly children, in Pakistan's deadliest-ever terror attack.

The army launched an operation in June 2014 in a bid to wipe out militant bases in the northwestern tribal areas and so bring an end to the bloody insurgency that has cost thousands of civilian lives since 2004.

Security in the country has since improved. Scattered attacks still take place, but they are fewer and of a lesser intensity than in previous years.

However, violence has continued in some of the tribal regions.
