Turkish military officer to appeal negative ruling of Greek Asylum Service within two weeks: lawyer

The arguments of the Greek Asylum Service which rejected on Wednesday the asylum request of one of the eight Turkish officers who fled to Greece in July after the failed coup attempt in Turkey, were unfounded, their Greek lawyer said on Thursday.

"The decision is based on personal conclusions made by the asylum service employee, and not on facts. The employees of the Asylum Service who handled the interviews did not follow the rules, violating articles of the asylum law," Stavroula Tomara claimed.

"We are going to appeal the initial decision to the Appeals Authority within two weeks,"the lawyer added.

Regarding two other officers, Tomara clarified that the Greek Asylum Service "froze" on Wednesday their applications due to procedural reasons. They were only orally informed of the negative content of the decision, but refused to receive it.

According to the procedure, the two officers can request the re-examination of their case within nine months.

Tomara also has submitted to the Asylum Service a request for assessment of the asylum claim of the eight officers to five other EU member states under the EU Dublin III Regulation, but has not received any answer yet, she told Xinhua.

The interviews of the other five Turkish officers have been completed and their lawyer has received the transcripts to file memos.

Greek Asylum Service sources speaking to Xinhua strongly rejected the lawyer's claims, but agreed that the procedure will be lengthy.

A day after the coup attempt in Turkey, the eight officers landed at an airport in northern Greece on a Turkish military helicopter and requested asylum, claiming that their lives are in danger if they return to their country. They denied any role in the coup attempt.

Turkey has formally requested their extradition, calling them "traitors."

While they filed claims for asylum, the eight officers were found guilty of illegal entry in Greece and were sentenced to two months in prison. According to Tomara, they should be released since they have served their sentence.
