12 Egyptian soldiers killed as militants attack North Sinai checkpoint: Army

Twelve army personnel and 15 militants were killed early on Friday when an armed group assaulted a North Sinai security checkpoint, Egypt’s army spokesman said in a Facebook statement.

The assailants attacked the army checkpoint in 4x4 vehicles and a shootout ensued, according to the statement. A number of attackers and six army personnel were also injured.

Egypt banned all 4x4 vehicles in army-operation zones in Sinai since July 2015.

Army forces are currently combing the area to find the assailants.

“The armed forces assert that these despicable acts will not deter it from its duty of protecting the great Egyptian people,” the statement added.

Hundreds of security forces in North Sinai have been killed in similar attacks by Islamist militants since the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Egyptian security forces also killed hundreds of suspected militants in North Sinai during the same period.
