Indian army on high alert after terrorist attack on Kashmir camps

Indian army officers and Border Security Forces in northern Kashmir are on high alert Monday after an attack on camps in Baramulla district left one guard dead and wounded a second, according to the army.

The attack, which the army and BSF have attributed to Pakistani terrorists, took place late on Sunday night on the Baramulla camps, some 53 kilometers from the state's summer capital of Srinagar.

The Northern Command of the Indian Army issued a statement saying that the "Baramulla incident situation (is) contained and under control", though no further details have been released.

According to army spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia, an exchange of gunfire was heard around 11.45pm local time on Sunday night (5.45pm GMT) after the heavily-armed terrorists threw grenades into the Rashtriya Rifles and BSF bases, as cited by the Times of India.

The attack comes less than four days after the Indian military launched surgical strikes across Line of Control with Pakistan in a counter-insurgency operation that killed 38 people.

  • The strikes, which have been denied by Pakistan, were retaliation for a raid by alleged Pakistani terrorists on the Uri military base on Sept. 18, when 17 Indian soldiers were killed, according to the Northern Command.

Politicians in New Delhi have lauded the efforts of the Indian army and BSF to stamp out the cross-border attacks and defend security in the restive area.

"We are proud of our armed forces. They have once again exhibited exemplary courage and valour by destroying the anti India designs," tweeted Indian Interior Minister Rajnath Singh.

  • The recent strife last week forced the evacuations of up to 5,000 residents living within ten kilometers of the border with Pakistan, said the Minister of State for Relief and Rehabilitation Ajay Nanda.

India and Pakistan have had a relationship marred by conflict since the United Kingdom's partition of the subcontinent in 1947, fighting two major wars and constantly teetering on the brink of hostilities over the disputed Kashmir territory.
