Poll: Majority of Filipinos are satisfied with Duterte

Filipinos are generally satisfied with the first three months of their new President's mandate, despite his violent campaign against drugs and his controversial comments, according to a survey released on Thursday.

The survey by the Social Weather Station (SWS) shows that 76 percent of 1,200 adults polled nationwide are satisfied with the performance of controversial president Rodrigo Duterte, while only 11 percent said they are not satisfied and 13 percent were undecided.

SWS said Duterte's "net satisfaction" rating was 64 percent, equivalent to "very good" in the SWS classification system.

The survey, conducted between 24 and 27 September, shows that Duterte currently ranks as the second most popular Philippine president, only two points behind Fidel Ramos, who ruled the country between 1992 and 1998.

Duterte is particularly well regarded in Mindanao, the island he comes from, where he received a net satisfaction of 85 percent or "excellent" in the SWS classification system.

The Philippine president is well liked despite his violent campaign against drugs, which started straight after Duterte's inauguration on June 30.

So far, more than 3,500 people, alleged drug pushers or users, have been killed in police operations and in extrajudicial killings.

Apart from harsh comments Duterte made about the UN, calling them a "stupid and useless organization" in response to their criticism of his anti-drug campaign, the president also made several attacks on the European Union and the United States, which he branded as "hypocrites".

Most Filipinos see Duterte as a spontaneous politician, different from the elite that has dominated the country for decades.
