The top governing body of Spain's Socialist Party were meeting on Saturday in an attempt to address the future of the now deeply divided party.
Almost 300 members of the PSOE's (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) federal committee gathered at party headquarters in Madrid over the party's internal state to decide on whether to support Secretary General Pedro Sanchez as party leader or create an interim commission ahead of fresh leadership elections.
But the start of the meeting was delayed by four hours and it almost immediately went into a recess over disagreement between supporters and critics of Sanchez over who among the Executive Committee was eligible to vote in light of a mass resignation on Wednesday.
About 100 supporters of Sanchez gathered outside the party's headquarters on Saturday morning, wearing T-shirts proclaiming "Yes to Pedro Sanchez" and holding placards declaring "No to the PP" (Popular Party), despite being warned not to protest outside the offices.
Sanchez said that he would step down as party leader late on Friday if the committee decided to pave the way for conservative Popular Party candidate and acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to form a Spanish government.

Mercredi, une partie de son équipe avait démissionné pour forcer son départ. Ses opposants souhaitaient notamment qu'il lève son véto à un nouveau gouvernement du conservateur Mariano Rajoy. Ils lui reprochaient aussi les mauvais résultats électoraux du parti. Ses partisans estimaient au contraire qu'il était préférable de faire barrage au Parti populaire de Mariano Rajoy, même si cela prolongeait le blocage du pays.
