U.N. announces cease-fire in Yemen

The United Nations said Monday that the parties to the conflict in Yemen have agreed to a 72-hour cease-fire.

The truce will take effect at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, U.N. Special Envoy Ismaïl Ould Cheikh Ahmed said in a statement.

Yemen's president, Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi, had earlier announced his support for the proposed cease-fire and his opponents, the Houthis, subsequently gave their assent.

The warring parties assured the special envoy they were ready to abide by the Terms and Conditions of the Cessation of Hostilities of April 10, 2016.

Initially set to last three days, the cease-fire will be subject to renewal.
